U of Florida Faces Cutbacks

The Chronicle of Higher Education is reporting that the University of Florida is facing a cut in state appropriations and trimming $47 million from its 2008-09 budget. The university is laying off 20 faculty members and 118 staffers. At the business school, the budget is being cut by about $1.5 million, eight faculty and two staff positions are being eliminated, and two undergraduate minors are getting the axe (real estate and entrepreneurship).

I wonder if we're going to see more of this at state schools as spending (and state tax receipts) decline during an economic downturn, and state legislatures are forced to make tough decisions.
